About the role:
We are seeking an Environment Permitting Advisor who is looking to join a small team of Environmental Permitting Technical Specialists on a 10-12 months fixed term contract/secondment. Emissions to land, air & water are regulated by the Environment Agency through the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR). The team’s role is to ensure that the Company has all the necessary Environmental Permits required to carry out its statutory functions and to offer specialist technical permitting advice to the business; and to work with the Environment Agency on all permitting matters.
Many of our Wastewater and Cleanwater assets have Environmental Permits which cover discharges to the environment, and you will be responsible for technical tasks, customer relations and the management of these permits as well as the Compliance Assessment Reporting (CAR) process that forms part of the Environment Agency’s assessment of our compliance against the requirements of these permits.
The Environmental Permitting and Regulation (EP&R) team are the subject matter experts for environmental permitting and provide technical support and guidance to Operations and the wider business so that the requirements of these Environmental Permits are properly understood. You will be interacting with and gaining exposure to various parts of the business at all levels, including Water Production, Wastewater Treatment, Network & Pumping, Environmental Management Systems and other key business units.
Key areas of responsibility will include:
Facilitate the delivery of Environment Agency led permit reviews and the associated regulatory requests for information (Regulation 61 notices), whilst providing technical support through the understanding of regulator guidance.
Support the EPR team to negotiate with the Environment Agency regarding new Permits and changes to existing Permits, submitting applications where necessary. Ensure the interests of the company are protected, that cost implications are minimised, regulatory requirements are appropriate and with permits delivered in a timely manner.
Provide technical advice, information and training support within the company to ensure effective and efficient delivery against permitting deadlines and regulatory obligations.
Facilitate the management and co-ordination of the CAR process, ensuring all reports are logged and necessary actions are communicated to Operations and responses sent to the Environment Agency in a timely manner.
Contribute to the wider Environmental Permitting and Regulation team function when required (for example on sludge or waste); support with documentation retention and control; respond to relevant consultation documents or routine requests for information from regulators or other technical stakeholders.To be successful, you will have the following skills and experience:
Degree or higher-level qualification in a relevant discipline (or equivalent).
Previous experience from in an applicable sector would be advantageous.
Ability to understand Environmental Legislation or Regulations.
Ability to project manage.
A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint is essential.
Ability to work within a team environment is essential.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.What’s in it for you?
